A Final farewell to the 2009 U. S. Paragliding Team:

"I’ve been to a few world championships since my first in 1991 ( I know, before a few of you were born!
J ) and by far this is one of the best experiences I’ve had because of the amount of support we had!!!  To know so many people back home all helped to get us there in the first place,  and for that to happen without the forever giving of Tony, Bill and Kevin as the Bard of Directors of this Corporation…Wow…thank you!!  Jeff to be with us again was…well…heart warming to say the least and to add his expertise in competition team strategies was a blessing.  His new love Jane and her infectious smile was so welcoming all the time……Ty in your face with the camera…video or on the computer posting the stuff almost live so people back home could follow and did I mention his calm wonderful presence ALWAYS..Then there is Raul…that man worked and worked…always smiling…so helpful… Then there was Rob who was the glue…he made everything happen…he gave so much….and how he stayed so happy all the time while tapping away on his Blackberry…. was impressive....My wonderful David was always there helping anyway he could and shooting both stills and video’s of launches……we’ll get them posted soon!!!   THEN THE A TEAM…Brad, Eric and Matt…you guys rocked…I love your enthusiasm and go for it attitude and encouraging me the whole time to keep pushing to win and ON THE SPEED BAR!!!  Thank you all!!!!   This was a dream team for real!!!"

This 5th place finish for the U. S. Team is something to be incredibly proud of. It is the highest finish ever for a U. S. Team and we can only hope to improve from here.

U. S. Individual Results:

Matt Beechinor - 20th place
Brad Gunnuscio - 27th place
Eric Reed - 29th place
Kari Castle - 85th place

Matt Beechinor, Brad Gunnuscio and Eric Reed each won one task during this ten day competition. In addition to his first place finish on Day 1 of the comp, Eric Reed also had two top 5 finishes. This is another accomplishment that is unprecedented for U. S. Paragliding Team Pilots and no other team in this event had all their pilots win a day's task in this event.

We are very proud of our team's efforts in this year's incredible World Paragliding Championships. We are also very thankful for all the support that has been shown to us by our sponsors and the paragliding community. Please know that mere words can not express how we feel for the generosity that has been shown to us.

On a sad note, our deepest condolences go out to Swiss pilot Stefan Schmoker's family and friends. Stefan was an amazing pilot and person, and we will miss his spirit and smile.

We are excited to announce the new 2009 U. S. Paragliding Team. This year's U. S. Paragliding Team includes Eric Reed, Matt "Farmer" Beechinor, Brad Gunnuscio, and Kari Castle. Our Team Leaders are Rob Sporrer and Jeff Huey. Josh Cohn will be ready as an alternate if needed, prior to the beginning of the comp. These spots were hard fought over the last 2 years with the highest caliber flying I have ever witnessed in U.S. competition history.  All of these pilots have worked extremely hard to earn their position on the U.S. Paragliding Team.  The U.S. Team also won the Pre-Worlds (warm-up event to the World Championships) in Valle this year against a very strong international field, AND we had 2 members on the podium at Monarco Competition just a few days before.  There is no doubt that they have an excellent chance to be on the podium as individuals and as a Team.  It is now our job to help them in their quest to represent the United States of America in this World arena!

Here is a look at your 2009 U. S. Paragliding Team. You can also be a part of "Our Team".   So please show your support by making a donation to "Our Team" today. Thank-you!

1.24.09 World Paragliding Championships opening ceremony parade - Team Leader Jeff Huey, Team Pilots: Kari Castle, Eric Reed, Brad Gunnuscio, Matt Beechinor and Team Leader Rob Sporrer.

As Team Leader Rob Sporrer declares in his opening statement on the U S Team Blog: "
Let gets ready to rumble! The 2009 Paragliding Worlds start tomorrow, and Team USA is fired up. The team has been flying here this week getting ready to race. We walked through the streets of Valle with the American flag and a group of kids from Valle as our escorts. Lots of people were chanting “USA”. We all had big smiles, and waived with approval.

The parade caravan arrived at the cultural center for the opening ceremonies. The Mayor, and many others spoke to the large audience. They ended the show with some fireworks, and Team USA made off for our private team dinner to debrief on the day’s meetings, and go over some strategy and mindset for the two weeks of racing ahead. We had an excellent discussion, and veteran Jeff Huey brought up some great history and got us all fired up. This party gets started tomorrow, and we will bring you all the news at the end of day 1."

Occupation: Cloud farmer    Education: BA
Glider type: Niviuk IcepeakXP 27    Harness type: Advance Impress
Reserve: Metamorfosi
Flying goals: Have fun with my friends and master the art of flying a paraglider. Flying since: I learned to fly in 1999 in Sun Valley Idaho thanks to Garth Callaghan taking pity on a poor college student transfixed by paragliders. Nate Scales helped further my flying education by giving constant flying advice over the years. I started competing in 2004 and believe that competitions are the best place to really take your flying to the next level.
Top Results: 2nd Place 2007 Canadian Nationals, 3rd Place 2008 Monarca Paragliding Open,  1st Nation Team 2008 Pre Worlds, Valle de Bravo,
Mexico, Task wins in 2008 Italy PWC and 2008 Pre Worlds in Mexico

BRAD GUNNUSCIO  - U.S. Team Pilot
Age: 33   Weight: 195
Occupation: Paragliding Instructor
Glider Type: Glider Niviuk Icepeak XP
Flying Goals: To learn as much as I possibly can about paragliding, and to share this knowledge with my fellow pilots. I strive learn how to fly safer, faster, higher and to throw down harder. For years I have wanted to be on the US Paragliding team and after being one spot shy in 2007 (a heartbreaker) I am totally honored, blessed, and stoked to achieve this goal! I learned to fly hangliders in 1996 and started paragliding in 97 after watching Chris Santacroce throw down at the point every night, and thinking to myself I want to do that. I love paragliding. This sport is my addiction, and has definitely changed my life.  I have a paragliding school in Utah (paraglideutah.com), and I sleep, breathe, eat, and bleed paragliding.  I want to thank all my clients who have  done clinics, tours, or purchased gear from me. You have helped me make this dream of mine possible, so Thank you! The next goal of mine is to nail the infinite tumble, which is very close. If I can achieve both of these goals in the same year it would be unbelievable for me. I will keep you posted.

KARI CASTLE - U.S. Team Pilot
Birthpace:
Royal Oak, Michigan, in 1960
Began Hang Gliding: 1981
Began Paragliding:
1988  Resides: Bishop, CA in the heart of the Owens Valley.
Just as Castle mastered the Owens Valley, she also mastered her competition in contest after contest. She won the very first U.S. Women’s National Hang Gliding Championship she attended, in 1988, and thirteen more U.S. titles came fast and furious. In 1996, she captured the first of her three Women’s World Hang Gliding Championships. In 1993 Castle made headlines when she became the first woman in history to win a major competition (the Sandia Classic) over a mixed-gender line-up, and when she entered the Canadian Nationals in 1995 – the sole woman in a field of elite men – she won the gold there, too.
She was crowned U.S. Women’s National Paragliding Champion in 1995, 2001, 2002, and 2003.
Besides participating in top paragliding and hang gliding competitions throughout the year, including Hang Gliding Worlds and Paragliding Europeans, she’s a paragliding and hang gliding instructor, and she leads tours both in the United States and in far-reaching locales like South Africa. http://karicastle.com/

U. S. Team Leader:  ROB SPORRER
Age:
40  Height and Weight: 6’1” - 180

Birthplace: Laramie, WY

Occupation: Owner - Eagle Paragliding - Paragliding Instructor
Education: BA

Paragliding History: Rob has been a paragliding instructor since 1997. He received the USHPA Instructor Of The Year Award in 2002, and was awarded a Commendation by USHPA in 2007.   Rob has been a huge supporter of competition pilots on his Eagle Paragliding team over the years. He also serves as a Regional Director on the USHPA Board of Directors.

Coaching goals: I hope to help raise funds so my team pilots can be taken care of and enjoy this experience they have dreamed of and worked so hard to earn.  I am excited to be working with Jeff Huey who coached the world team in Brazil in 2005.  We will work together to be sure our team is ready.  This could be the most challenging Paragliding world event to date.  I expect these pilots will need to reach deep physically and mentally since Valle De Bravo has proven to be very consistent.  I predict we will have 15 days of uninterrupted flying, and quite possibly the most valid paragliding world event in history

U. S. Team Leader:  JEFF HUEY
Education:
BS in Mechanical Engineering
Occupation: Currently on a hiatus from a career Oilfield Construction Engineering.
Qualifications for team leader position:
Jeff started hang gliding in 1976 in Alaska.
First tried paragliding in 1992 at Pine Mountain in Oregon
Rankings: Top ten for hang gliding competitors from 1979 to 1986. Was in the top ten in paragliding 2004 and 2005. He has been inolved in several US National team competions in both hang gliding and paragliding. He was the US Paragliding Team Leader at the 2005 Paragliding World Championships in Governador Valadares, Brazil. Jeff's international competitive experience and relationships with many of the key players leaves him well suited to deal with any political or administrative situation that may arise.
Outlook on the 2009 Paragliding World Championships:
Jeff points out: "The level of performance in the US paragliding competition scene has risen dramatically in the past several years and as a consequence we will be fielding our best team ever at the 2009 Worlds.
Combine that with the fact that the World Championships are being held at a site that US pilots are very familiar with bodes well for the US team.
The first place finish of the US National team in last years Pre-Worlds held in Valle reinforces my optimism".

Josh Cohn, Alternate U.S. Team Pilot
Age: 35 Height and Weight: 5' 9"  150
Home: Oakland
, CA;
Marital Status:
Shacked Up
Occupation:
Buyer, independent music wholesaler
Education: Masters, geology
Glider type: UP Edge
Reserve: Lara Gold   Harness type: Genie Race
Home flying site: Dunlap?  First altitude flight: Whaleback, CA, 1989
Ratings:
P4    Total number of flights: ~2800
Total reserve deployments in anger:  3 - Criteria for hucking laundry: "If you think you might die, get it out."
Worst injury resulting from reserve ride: Blisters, from hiking down 4000'.
Philosophy: Attitude is key: It is your reaction to events that determines your happiness more than the events themselves. While it's good to be motivated, taking oneself too seriously often sabotages success.
Favorite flight: Flying from Billing to Manali after the Pre-PWC India in Nov. 2002 with 9 others. It had only been done a few times before, was off our maps, and there were high passes in the way. The flight was fairly easy, though massively committing. The landing in 20mph valley winds on rice paddy terraces at the end did provide some excitement.  The 115km triangle last task of the 2008 Chelan XC Open is up there too.
Flying goals: Go bivouac flying in a cool spot, win the US Nationals again.
